Hello and welcome! My name is Karina Patel, and I am a photojournalist based in the Bay Area. Photography has been a passion of mine since the first time I used a DSLR camera in high school, when I took a course through First Exposures, a youth program in San Francisco.

I am drawn to people and their stories and love taking the time to learn and understand more about them. I love how photography can provide a deeper, visual understanding of any given story and has the ability to spark conversation and change.

My studies with Pulitzer Prize winning photographer Kim Komenich at San Francisco State University taught me how to shoot everything from breaking news to studio portraits. I have also been trained in long form storytelling, news writing and multimedia skills such as video, audio and web design.

I interned at the San Mateo Daily Journal, where I covered city news and events, business stories, profiles and health stories. I hope to continue to work in newsrooms and apply my photography skills to travel and work beyond the Bay Area.

When not learning all that I can about visual journalism, I enjoy the beach, hikes, and any dessert with chocolate in it. Even though I enjoy how journalism gets me to go out and experience the world, I also love to get cozy on my couch and watch comedies.
